Did You Know?

The Asimakanisekan Askiy reserve in Saskatoon was the first Canadian reserve to be built on land previously set aside for city development.

Neighbourhood Development Organizations (NDOs) are voluntary, non-government, legal entities that were established for the purpose of reducing poverty in the inner-city. Through the actions of its residents in these low-income neighbourhoods, NDOs provide a comprehensive response to community needs of social and economic security by working in partnership with municipalities, government departments, and other community agencies. The program is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation and the Ministry of Social Services.

There are currently three NDOs in Saskatchewan:

  • Quint Development Corporation in Saskatoon,
  • River Bank Development Corporation in Prince Albert, and
  • Connecting as Neighbours Co-operative in Moose Jaw

These NDOs have developed key initiatives relating to the improvement of housing in their communities, as well as supporting a variety of community-based business and co-operative development projects. They have encouraged and supported the development of numerous co operative ventures, including worker co-ops for home renovations, day-care centres, and food co-operatives. In addition, the NDOs have undertaken a number of employment and skills training initiatives to improve the social and economic well-being of their residents.
